2010 Harley Davidson Sportster 883

Iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has said it will open a factory in India to assemble select motorcycle models. Currently, Harley-Davidson India imports completely assembled motorcycles from its U.S. final assembly plants.

Once the Indian CKD (completely knocked down) assembly facility near Bawal in Haryana is operational, Harley-Davidson India will import CKD kits for select current models, consisting of components produced by Harley-Davidson’s U.S. plants and by the company’s suppliers. Harley’s Indian employees at the Haryana facility will then assemble the components into finished motorcycles. Other models will continue to be imported as completely built motorcycles (CBU) for now. Harley Davidson to assemble bikes in India

The first model likely to be assembled in India is the 833 Sportster. This CBU bike costs Rs. 6.95 lakhs currently. However, we could expect a significant reduction in price once this bike becomes a CKD bike when assembled locally.

Harley Davidson has announced its 2011 models for the American market which include: Sportster Superlow, XR1200X and Road Glide Ultra. However, there is no official confirmation whether these models will be offered in India. Based on the market demand, the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer may offer them in the country next year.

Mahindra Mojo 300 cc

Mahindra made an entry into the motorcycle segment with the premium 300 cc Mojo launched earlier this month. The jury is out on the Mojo’s radical design, but according to the company, the bike follows a “Tear Drop” design found only in extreme racing machines. The double-barreled exo-frame is also a first on Indian roads. Also read Mahindra Mojo specs and photos

Mahindra Mojo uses a Ducati Energia electronic fuel injection system for better fuel efficiency.

Advanced liquid cooling technology and one of the largest petal disc brakes (320 mm) on any bike in India are other notable features of the Mojo. At Rs. 1.75 lakhs (ex-showroom, Pune), the Mojo is a great option for performance enthusiasts without having to break the bank.

bajaj ktm duke 125

Bajaj, which has a stake in the Austrian KTM, had earlier considered launching KTM bikes in India through the CKD route. However, it’s now decided to manufacture KTM bikes at its Chakan plant and the first bike will be the KTM Duke 125. More about the Bajaj KTM Duke 125

Rumors suggest the Duke’s frame is flexible and could even be fitted with a higher-powered engine should the need arise. While sources say the KTM Duke 125 would be launched only later in 2011, Bajaj would be making a push for the KTM Duke 125 to be rolled out soon.
